"AZ-Pack, UAB implements the project "Introduction of technologies increasing energy efficiency"

Project objective. To reduce greenhouse gas emissions through technological solutions.

Project activities. During the implementation of the project, AZ-Pack, UAB will carry out activities that will contribute to the reduction of primary energy consumption and GHG emissions in the company. This will contribute to Lithuania’s overall impact on climate change, the promotion of clean and fair energy, circular economy, adaptation to climate change, prevention and risk management of extreme climate events, air pollution and resource efficiency. The project intends to purchase new packaging production lines that will enable the company to use energy more efficiently and reduce its GHG emissions in the production process.

Project result. The implementation of the envisaged technological solutions will result in a more efficient use of energy and a reduction of at least 30% in GHG emissions.

The project is funded by the European Regional Development Fund.

Project duration – 2024-05-08 – 2027-08-21.

Project value: € 1 009 400,00.

EU Building the future of Lithuania

Currently, AZ-Pack UAB exports its products to more than 30 countries (Western and Central Europe, Scandinavia, Eastern Europe and Asia), and supplies the largest Lithuanian food production companies, farms and retail chains. The company’s main products are vacuum bags, printed bags and Bag in Box packaging for liquids. Each year the company actively develops its export expansion, increasing sales volumes and at the same time looking for modern technological solutions that would help to improve economies of scale in production, as well as reduce the environmental impact.

On 10 February 2021, the company started to implement the technological eco-innovation project No 03.3.2-LVPA-K-837-04-0026 “Introduction of technological eco-innovations in the activities of AZ-Pack, UAB” under the 2014-2020 EU Structural Funds Investment Operational Programme measure No 03.3.2-LVPA-K-837 “Eco-innovations LT+”. The aim of the project is to reduce the negative impact of production on the environment by reducing the consumption of raw materials and production waste. To achieve the project’s objective, a new, more efficient and more capable production line for Stand up Pouch and Bag in Box packaging was purchased. The increased capacity of the equipment is expected to produce twice as much packaging as would normally be produced with other equipment, while the increased capacity of the equipment will help to manage the production of packaging more efficiently – optimising the use of raw materials by eliminating unnecessary formats and thus reducing the amount of unnecessary film waste.

The project will also help the company to expand its range of packaging products with a new product – Stand up Pouch packaging. “Stand up Pouch is a stand-up pouch with an integrated tap for packaging liquid food and non-food products. Demand for these packages is growing rapidly worldwide, as this type of packaging is lighter compared to other types of packaging such as plastic tanks and glass containers. Due to the lighter weight of Stand up Pouch packaging and the less space it takes up during transport, this method of packaging liquids is cost-effective, helping to reduce logistics and storage costs, and contributes to environmental protection – the lighter weight of the packaging and the reduced use of transport resources help to save natural resources and contribute to reducing air pollution.

The project is financed by AZ-Pack, UAB from its own funds and the European Regional Development Fund under the 2014-2020 European Union Funds Investment Operational Programme Measure No. 03.3.2-LVPA-K-837 “Eco-innovations LT+”.

“System for the management of packaging and packaging waste supplied to the domestic market in accordance with Lithuanian harmonised standards at AZ-Pack, UAB”

Sustainability and environmental issues are a hot topic around the world today. The increase in environmental pollution and the huge amount of plastic used have become some of the key environmental issues that need to be addressed.

As part of our focus and in response to environmental concerns, we have been working for some time to take measures and actions to reduce the impact of our activities on nature and the environment. In order to be a responsible producer, we strive to provide a range of packaging that not only complies with all European Union requirements, but also has a lower environmental impact. We believe that it is the responsibility of every producer of packaging materials not only to look for innovative packaging solutions that are less harmful to the environment, but also to educate their customers about this choice.

Today, we can offer our customers not only recyclable packaging, but also packaging that uses fewer raw materials than conventional packaging and has the same quality characteristics as standard packaging.

On 25 March 2015, we implemented a system for the management of packaging and packaging waste placed on the domestic market in accordance with Lithuanian harmonised standards. In cooperation with KTU (Kaunas University of Technology) https://midf.ktu.edu/news/az-pack-vidaus-rinkai-tiekiamu-pakuociu-ir-pakuociu-atlieku-tvarkymo-pagal-lietuvos-darniuosius-standartus-uab-az-pack-imoneje-sistema/ and the MITA (Agency for Science, Innovation and Technology) tool “Inočekiai LT”, we have ensured our customers that the products we supply meet the latest requirements for optimal packaging.

The project “In-house system for the management of packaging and packaging waste supplied to the domestic market in accordance with Lithuanian harmonised standards at AZ-Pack, UAB”, financed by the European Regional Development Fund under the European Regional Development Fund’s Operational Programme for Economic Growth “Research and Technological Development for the Competitiveness and Growth of the Economy”, implementing measure VP2-1.3-ŪM-05-K “Inočekiai LT”, has been successfully completed at the Department of Thermal and Atomic Energy.

The entire project and the declarations of compliance with the harmonised standards were prepared in compliance with the requirements of the Law on Packaging and Packaging Waste Management of the Republic of Lithuania and the relevant legal acts; during the implementation of the project, various studies were carried out, which are defined as necessary by the EU Directive, harmonised standards of the Republic of Lithuania and other legal acts: studies of vibro-impact, crushing, studies of the lower calorific value of the mass of the packages, studies of the resistance of the packaging of the products to piercing.

After summarising the studies carried out within the framework of the project “System for the management of packaging and packaging waste supplied to the domestic market in accordance with the Lithuanian harmonised standards in the company AZ-Pack, UAB”, preventive measures to reduce the cost of raw materials in the company were also discussed.

The clearly defined sustainability standards have allowed a reassessment of the alternative vacuum packaging options available on the market and the materials used in their manufacture. Based on the main criteria that determine the quality and distinctiveness of a product, we can make a reasonable assessment of whether the packaging meets the intended requirements, the definition of an optimal packaging. The research-based indicators of film strength, oxygen and water vapour permeability, and carbon dioxide permeability used in the production of packaging provide a completely new understanding of quality packaging.
